THE COMPLETE SERIES - Frontline (1994 - 1997)

Exploring my DVD collection and my addiction to owning complete sets.  Why I own, and why I recommend the complete series of...

Frontline.  The (Australian) ABC series Frontline (aka Behind the Frontline or Breaking News in the US) was a satirical series about the grubby inner workings of a current affairs show, the tactics used to grab rating and the clash of egos behind the scenes.

The following may contain very mild spoilers, although it tries to avoid doing so.  The "The Ending" section will mention if a show had a resolution or a cliffhanger (but no description of what happens).

BREAKING THE COMPLETIST - Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Exploring my DVD collection and my addiction to owning complete sets, including seasons and movies I don't want to own, even to complete the set.

Every odd numbered Star Trek film sucks, they say.  But they usually have all the films in their Star Trek collection.

This blog started with me saying how I didn't want to own Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) on DVD, no matter how much it hurt not to have the complete set of Star Trek films.  But does that make it harder or easier not to get other films in the series?

THE INCOMPLETIST - The Sandbaggers

Exploring my DVD collection and my addiction to owning complete sets.  Shows and movies I want to own on DVD, but can't....

The Sandbaggers is a ITV SPY series from 1978 - 1980, focused more on the head of a Special Operations department, rather than the work for field agents, so it's a political drama more than an action series.

The Code Name Theory

To deal with the different faces (not sure why it is necessary) and the extended period of Bond's activity (get over it) some people have adopted the theory that James Bond isn't a single characters, but rather each actor plays a different man using the code name James Bond.

The theory goes:  Sean Connery played James Bond (whether it was a real or cover name is unknown), quit for whatever reason, was replaced by the character who George Lazenby played who quit after the death of his wife Tracy (this character was so in character that he used the name even when on holiday and at his wedding).  The character Sean Connery played returned to the position, avenged Lazenby's character's wife's death and went on at least one more mission.  He was then replaced by another (older) man who also had a dead wife and leaves flowers at the grave of Tracy Bond (who died the same year as Lazenby's character's wife Tracy).  This "Bond" is eventually replaced by a Bond played by Pierce Brosnan who goes on a mission to Russia during which 006 is seemingly killed.  He is replaced by a new character played by Timothy Dalton who uses the name even when he no longer works for MI6.  Dalton's character returns to work for MI6 but is later replaced by the man he replaced, played by Brosnan.
Some adherents to this theory claim that the reboot, is actually a continuation, and that Daniel Craig plays a new person using the James Bond cover name.  This, of course, means that Judy Dench's M somehow went from being recruited from outside the service to being a veteran of the Cold War.
Some also include the non-EON Casino Royale comedy/parody, in which David Niven's James Bond comes out of retirement can complains about the man that is now using his name.  He arranges for many agents to use the name at the same time and the world ends up being destroyed.

THE COMPLETIST'S GUIDE - Introduction

Collecting some movie and TV series is simple, buy the first film than the film with "2" after the title and so one.  However, some series are harder, have different names, change naming schemes are released it out of order or strange sets.  These posts are designed to help navigate certain film and TV series collections.

COMPLETIST RANT - Changing Case Designs

Beyond just obtaining the complete set, Completists are plagued by other issues.  Changing Case Design, for example.  You really want all the DVD covers to match to create a pretty looking set.  For example, let's look at my complete The West Wing collection (shown above):  7 seasons, 4 different types of case.  Now, I get the idea of changing-up the design, improving problematic designs, making things look newer and hip.  But for the completist, it's a real pain in the butt.  You want the complete set, but you want it to look the same.  For example, here's a much prettier complete set I saw online:

As I said, I get changing things.  I get it no making old-style available because you don't want competing designs on shelves confusing customers and retailers.  But it's always the original fans, those who buy it from the start who suffer most.  There's nothing wrong with people who join a fandom later, they have just as much right to be a fan, but they it's the long-term fans being penalised.

Or maybe I'm making a big deal out of nothing.

BREAKING THE COMPLETIST - Intolerable Cruelty

Looking at my compulsion to collect DVDs... like movies I don't want to own, even to complete the set.

A Romantic Comedy

Being a DVD completist doesn't just mean you feel you have to get every season of a TV show you like (even the bad seasons) or every film in a film series (even the bad films), it can also be about the works of a director, or in this case, directors... the Coen brothers.
